Why does my new purse have a weird smell, and how can I get rid of it?Updated a year ago
We understand that receiving a purse with an unexpected smell can be frustrating, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.
Our purses are made from high-quality vegan leather, which is an environmentally friendly and cruelty-free alternative to traditional leather. However, vegan leather can sometimes develop an unusual smell due to a few factors:
Material Properties: Vegan leather is made from synthetic materials which can sometimes emit odors as a byproduct of the manufacturing process. These odors can become more noticeable when the purse is stored in a box for an extended period.
Lack of Ventilation: The purse is packaged tightly in order to ship it to you safely, but this means the purse is without proper ventilation. The enclosed space can trap and intensify any smells that are naturally produced by the materials, especially in warm conditions.
To minimize this, we include a free sachet inside the purse to help absorb odors and keep it fresh during transit. If you didn’t receive a sachet, we sincerely apologize—our team at the warehouse may have missed including one with your bag, and we’re working hard to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.
In most cases, any residual smell will dissipate within a few days. Here are some steps you can take to help speed up the process:
- Air it out: Place the purse in a well-ventilated area, preferably in a cool, shaded space. Avoid prolonged time in the direct sunlight, which may damage the material. You can easily flip the bag inside out, for better airing out.
- Use baking soda: Place the purse in a large, open container or bag with a small bowl of baking soda nearby. Baking soda is excellent for absorbing odors. Leave it for 24-48 hours.
- Mild cleaning: Wipe the bag gently with a soft cloth and a mixture of water and mild soap, allowing it to dry completely afterward. Our maya bag can also withstand a delicate cycle in the washing machine. Be sure to use a gentle laundry detergent and let the bag air dry.
